Why a 50% snap is worse than Thanos thought

Removing 50% of individuals isn't 50% damage — it's asymmetric collapse. Predator-prey systems run on ratios. Halve the prey → predators starve faster than expected. Halve the pollinators → most flowering plants fail in one season.

Marvel's snap kills uniformly, but real population removal is biased: small populations of rare species cross the Allee threshold — the density below which finding a mate, hunting in a pack, or warming a colony stops working — and go to local extinction first.

Real cascade failures

Bees → crops: 75% of food crops depend on pollinators. Lose half the bees, lose ~30% of fruit and nut yields within a decade.

Apex predators → grasslands: wolves removed from Yellowstone → elk explosion → willow collapse → beaver collapse → stream erosion. (Restoration in 1995 reversed this — a textbook trophic cascade.)

Cod fishery 1992: a collapse to ~50% didn't stop there — the Northern cod stayed near 5% of historical levels for thirty years. Some food webs don't bounce back.

Why the snap can't be undone

Mass + time = path dependency. By the time of Endgame's reverse snap, five years later, keystone interactions had already restructured. Bringing species back doesn't bring back the niches.

Real-world analog: Pleistocene megafauna extinction. The mammoth steppe never returned.
