What is a near-miss in slot machines?

A near-miss is a losing outcome that visually resembles a win — two jackpot symbols and one just off. Slot designers use weighted virtual reels to make near-misses appear far more often than chance, because the brain reads 'almost won' almost like a real win, keeping players spinning 2–3× longer.

How to use

What casinos actually do

Real slot reels use virtual stops: the physical reel has a few jackpot symbols, but the random-number map places extra virtual stops just above and below the jackpot line. The payout probability is untouched — yet the symbol lands "one off" far more than chance would allow.

Why your brain falls for it
